Chicory Greens - Catalogna Emerald - Cichorium intybus
Biennial Also known as Italian Dandelion. Chicory greens have long, broad, dandelion-like leaves with an asparagus-like flavor. A rapid grower, the leaves and tender spring stalks of Catalogna Emerald can be used for early greens.
Soil & Water: Chicory tolerates acidic soils with a pH of 5.5-7.0. Nutritional and watering requirements are moderate. Grow in similar soil as lettuce.
Planting & Growing: Start seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost, or sow seed directly outdoors every 2 weeks from spring to early summer and late summer to fall. May overwinter outdoors in mild winter climates.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest leaves as needed when they are a usable size. Chicory plants harvested after a few frosts are sweeter than their spring counterparts.
