Carrot - Atomic Red - Daucus carota var. sativus

Biennial Heirloom. Atomic Red Carrots produce crisp, red roots with mild, sweet flavor. The good sized roots grow to roughly 8" long. These carrots are particularly high in the red pigment lycopene and their brilliant color grows deeper after cooking.

Soil and Water: Grow in light, deeply tilled soils with plenty of added organic matter. Carrots like good drainage and a pH range of 6.0-6.6 with regular water. Keep seeds moist during germination. Mulch once established to keep roots cool.

Planting and Growing: Direct seed 2 weeks before the last frost in 3 week successions. Carrots can be grown almost all year except in climates with extreme heat or freezing temperatures. Mix the small seeds with dry coffee grounds or sand to improve seed distribution. Thin the carrots to 3" apart.

Harvesting and Storage: Trim off the foliage to extend storage time, but do not wash the carrots. Layer roots in a container with damp medium and store in cool, humid conditions or store carrots in the ground over winter under a layer of straw.
