The latest edition of the Western gardener’s best friend is stuffed with color photos of plants. Find out how this feature evolved, in Tricia’s interview with Johanna Silver, an associate garden editor at Sunset magazine, who worked on the book.

Seated at the Sunset  table, in the Star+Apple Edible Garden display at the 2012 San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, Tricia and Johanna give you a close-up look at the living succulent “table runner” that captured the imagination of show visitors.

The book has directions for making the succulent table, along with DIY ideas for all aspects of outdoor life. Johanna also explains how to ID your Western garden climate, how the editors decided which plants to include in the 4,000 listed, and how to use the new Plant Finder search function at Sunset.com.
