Pea - Progress #9 - Pisum sativum var. sativum
Hardy Annual Heirloom. This is the leading large-pod home garden shelling pea. Its vigorous dark-green plants produce 4"-5" pods with 6-9 large, wrinkled dark-green peas. It is an early producer with consistently heavy yields. A dwarf variety, Progress #9 needs no staking and is easy to grow. Great flavor and quality.
Soil & Water: Peas are not particular about soil, but prefer those with plenty of added organic matter and a pH pf 5.5-6.8. Provide moderate water until bloom, then lower the water rate.
Planting & Growing: Peas perform best in cool weather between 60-75F; growing season may be extended using shade cloth or frost fabrics. Presoak seeds to help prevent disease and to speed germination. Progress #9 is wilt resistant. Its dwarf vines require no staking.
Harvesting & Storage: Peas are usually ready for harvest about 3 weeks after the flower appears and before peas are fully developed in the pods. Regular picking extends production.
